SUPPLEMENTS
Zinc and testosterone. Helpful if you're low, useless if you're not.
Short answer: zinc is essential for making testosterone, and men who are zinc deficient often have low testosterone that improves with supplementation. But in men with normal zinc levels, extra zinc doesn't raise testosterone. The adult male requirement is 11 mg per day, and the upper safe limit is 40 mg.
What the research shows
A classic study (Prasad et al., Nutrition 1996) found that restricting zinc in young men lowered testosterone, while supplementing zinc-deficient older men raised it. A 2009 trial in men with normal zinc found no increase. The pattern is consistent: zinc corrects a deficiency, it doesn't boost beyond normal.
Who may be low
Men at higher risk include those who eat little meat or seafood, heavy drinkers, people with digestive conditions like Crohn's, older men, and athletes who sweat heavily. Vegetarian diets high in phytates reduce zinc absorption.
Dose and safety
The RDA for men is 11 mg a day. The tolerable upper limit is 40 mg. Long-term high doses can cause copper deficiency, lower good cholesterol and weaken immunity. Popular ZMA products typically contain around 30 mg, which is near the ceiling when combined with diet.
Food first
Oysters are by far the richest source. Beef, crab, pork, chicken, pumpkin seeds, cashews and fortified cereals are good sources. Most men eating a mixed diet already meet their needs.
Zinc, sperm and libido
Zinc is concentrated in semen and plays a role in sperm production. A large 2020 trial (Schisterman et al., JAMA) found zinc plus folic acid did not improve sperm quality or fertility in men without deficiency. Libido effects are only seen when low T from deficiency is corrected.

QUESTIONS
What people ask before signing up.
Does zinc increase testosterone?
Only if you're zinc deficient. In men with normal levels, studies show no increase.
How much zinc should a man take for testosterone?
Most men get enough from food. If supplementing, stay around 11 to 25 mg and under the 40 mg daily limit.
How long does zinc take to raise testosterone?
In deficient men, studies saw changes over about 3 to 6 months.
Is ZMA good for testosterone?
ZMA only helps men who are low in zinc or magnesium. Trials in well-nourished athletes found no benefit.
