SEXUAL FUNCTION

How long should sex last? Shorter than porn made you think.

Short answer: in stopwatch studies, the median time from penetration to ejaculation is about 5 to 6 minutes. Sex therapists rate 3 to 7 minutes of intercourse as adequate and 7 to 13 as desirable. Longer than that isn't necessarily better, and duration is only a small part of what partners actually rate as good sex.

What the stopwatch studies found

In a study of 500 couples across five countries (Waldinger et al., 2005), partners timed intercourse with a stopwatch. The median was about 5.4 minutes, ranging from under a minute to over 40. A follow-up study found a similar median of about 6 minutes. Duration tended to be slightly shorter in older men, and condom use made little difference.

What sex therapists consider ideal

A survey of members of the Society for Sex Therapy and Research (Corty & Guardiani, 2008) rated intercourse of 1 to 2 minutes as too short, 3 to 7 minutes as adequate, 7 to 13 minutes as desirable, and 10 to 30 minutes as too long. Many people overestimate how long 'good' sex lasts.

What partners actually care about

Most women don't reach orgasm from penetration alone. Surveys consistently show that foreplay, clitoral stimulation, connection and communication predict satisfaction far more than intercourse duration. Total sexual encounters, including foreplay, often last much longer than intercourse itself.

Why porn distorts it

Porn scenes are edited, filmed over hours and often involve performers using medication. Comparing yourself to them is like comparing your commute to a Formula 1 highlight reel.

When timing becomes a medical issue

Premature ejaculation is clinically defined as ejaculation that consistently happens within about 1 minute of penetration (lifelong) or a clear reduction to about 3 minutes or less (acquired), with lack of control and distress. Delayed ejaculation is the opposite: difficulty or inability to finish despite wanting to. Both are treatable.

If you want to last longer anyway

That's a reasonable goal. Pelvic floor training, the stop-start method, breathing and managing anxiety are the evidence-based starting points.

Foreplay and connection matter more to most partners.

QUESTIONS

What people ask before signing up.

What is the average time for sex?

Stopwatch studies found a median of about 5 to 6 minutes of intercourse, with wide variation.

Is 2 minutes too short?

It's on the short side but common. Premature ejaculation is clinically defined as about 1 minute or less, consistently, with distress.

How long do women want sex to last?

Surveys suggest many women prefer intercourse lasting somewhat longer than average, but foreplay and clitoral stimulation matter more for satisfaction.

Does sex get shorter with age?

Studies show a slight decrease in average duration with age, but the difference is small.
