Smoking and ED. Your erections notice first.

Smoking roughly doubles the risk of erectile dysfunction, and the risk rises with the number of cigarettes. Nicotine and smoke damage the lining of blood vessels and reduce nitric oxide, which erections depend on. Vaping is not proven safe for erections either. The good news: many men see better erections within months of quitting, especially under 50.

How smoking causes ED

Erections need arteries to widen fast. Smoking damages the endothelium, lowers nitric oxide, stiffens arteries and promotes plaque. The penile arteries are small, so they show damage before the heart does.

How much risk

Large studies find current smokers have about 1.5 to 2 times the ED risk of non-smokers, with heavy smokers highest. Former smokers carry less risk than current ones.

Vaping and nicotine

Nicotine itself constricts blood vessels. Early research links vaping to ED as well. Nicotine pouches and gum are better than smoke but not neutral.

Recovery after quitting

In one study, about a quarter of men who quit for a year saw ED improve, versus none who kept smoking. Gains are biggest in younger men with mild ED.

Warning sign

ED in a smoker can be an early warning of heart disease, often appearing years before symptoms. It is worth a check-up.

QUESTIONS

What people ask before signing up.

Can quitting smoking cure ED?

For many men it improves erections, sometimes fully, especially if quitting early.

How long after quitting do erections improve?

Some men notice changes within weeks; most studies measure clear gains at 6 to 12 months.

Does vaping cause ED?

Nicotine constricts blood vessels and early studies show a link. It is not a risk-free option.

Is smoking ED permanent?

Not always. Long-term heavy smoking can cause lasting damage, but most men benefit from quitting.
