BY THE NUMBERS
How often do couples have sex? The averages by age.
US adults have sex about 54 times a year on average, roughly once a week, according to General Social Survey data. Frequency peaks in the 20s (around 80 times a year) and declines gradually with age, to roughly 20 times a year in the 60s. Research suggests that once a week is where happiness benefits plateau. The right number is the one that satisfies both partners.
Averages by age
Based on GSS analyses: people in their 20s report about 80 times a year, 30s about 60 to 70, 40s about 50 to 60, 50s about 40, and 60s about 20. Married and cohabiting couples have more sex than singles on average.
Why it declines
Time since the relationship began, kids, work, stress, health conditions, medications and falling testosterone all play a part. The early 'honeymoon' frequency naturally drops within a few years.
The once a week finding
A large study found that relationship well-being rose with sex up to about once a week, then leveled off. More is not automatically better.
Mismatched desire
Different libidos are one of the most common relationship issues. Talking openly, scheduling intimacy and widening what counts as sex help more than chasing an average.
When a drop matters
A sudden fall in desire or ability, not explained by life circumstances, can signal low testosterone, depression or a health issue worth checking.
